Part Of NBA Game Replayed For First Time Since 1983

The Miami Heat and the Atlanta Hawks will have to replay the final 51.9 seconds in overtime of their December 19th game because of a mistake. The Hawks ended up winning that game 117-111 but that win is erased from the win column and the Heat's loss is also erased. In that part of the game, Heat center Shaquille O'neal committed a foul and was fouled out of the game. The league reported that O'neal shouldn't have been fouled out because he only had five fouls instead of the six that it takes for a player to be fouled out. The league also fined the Hawks $50,000 for failing to report the mistake. The league said that the mistake came from when Heat forward Udonis Haslem was called for a foul. The scorer's table credited O'neal with the foul instead of Haslem. They will replay the final 51.9 seconds on March 8, when the Heat come back to play the Hawks in Atlanta. It is the first time since 1982-1983 season that that has happened. Why play this game if it is not going to mean anything to the Heat at this point? What if O'neal get injured between now and then? Why did the league decide to uphold the protest?
